Day 3 : Hunting the Northern Lights and Kirkenes

The highlight of the day would be docking at Kirkenes, the most northern port of call before the ship turned on its southward journey.

We arrived at Kirkenes as per schedule.

Many of the travelers disembarked in Kirkenes to go to other destination.

Our plan was to walk to town (quite aimless). We reached the small town centre after walking for about 15 minutes.

We 'explored' the main town centre within 20 minutes?! With nowhere to go, we asked a lady for the direction to a taxi stand/office.


We found the office and requested for a taxi to go to the snow hotel and to make a return trip. We also told the driver that we would spend time to explore the snow hotel.

After about 20 minutes, we reached the snow hotel. The compound was bigger than expected. The entrance fee was 250kor per person.

We spent about 1/2 hour in the snow hotel.

After checking with the driver that the Norwegian-Russian Border was about a 15 minutes ride away, we decided to go there as well.

We arrived at the border after about 15 minutes of journey.

There is a small souvenir store and the husky belongs to the shop's owner.

The taxi sent us back to the Hurtigruten. The taxi fare cost about 1200Kor (130Eur).

We went for the short film "The Pomor Trade". Then we did our usual walk of the entire upper deck of the ship.
Then we had a early dinner, using all the food that we had.

There was no northern light. The sea became very choppy after midnight.
