Walvis Bay, Namibia PB116 Day 73 - 75

The boat crossed the Atlantic Ocean from South America to Africa.
Namibia - Walvis Bay
Africa Walvis Bay came into view in the early morning before the sunrise. Unlike the other port call, the desert view stretched before one's view as the sun gradually lit up the landscape. Walvis Bay - "Whale Bay" is a natural deep water harbour and also the second largest city in Namibia.
East of the bay, the coastal sand dunes like Dune 7 the tallest dune in the world and it also marks the start of the Namib Desert. Its name is derived from being the seventh dune across river Tsauchab. The sight of the vast desert with undulating dune was impressive and captivating.
There is a rail track by Dune 7 that stretched into the desert <<I wonder if it is operational>>.
The Welwitschia plant that is found on the Namib desert is informally called the "living fossil" as many plants could be more than 1000 years old.
Moon Landscape Valley - it s lunar-like landscape was spectacular with the mountain ranges into the far horizon.
The van drove to Goankontes Oasis in the Namib Naukluft Park for a short break. As the driver drove through the bumpy road, he joked about it being a "African Massage".
We then proceeded to the town - Swakopmund. I did a bit of souvenir shopping, a nice cup of coffee and cake.
On the way back by the coastal road, the scenery of the desert 'meeting' the (Atlantic) ocean was arresting. It also passed through the local low-cost housing complexes.
We also stopped by one of the beaches to look at the flamingoes.
Outside the terminal gate, stalls of souvenir stores were already set-out.
By the evening, the boat set sail for Cape Town.
Day 74 - 75 South Atlantic Ocean
The boat sailed for two days before arriving in Cape Town, South Africa. The sea was rather rough but the the sunrise was particularly stunning too.
Thoughts
Walvis Bay has a chequered history of being ruled by different successive colonists until its sovereignty was transferred to Namibia from South Africa in 1994. I hope that peace and prosperity continue to prevail for Walvis Bay.
