Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve - Sembawang Park (October 17, ~20km?)
Start: Kranji MRT
End: Caberra MRT
(Photos: Courtesy of fellow walkers)
There are two main walks: the Migratory Bird Trail (Yellow) and the Coastal+Forest trails (Red/Purple).
Red Trail
It was rather crowded with groups of photographers and other walkers along the walkway.
The trails led through the mangrove and the forest with pod-structures as observation decks.
Overall, the red trail provided a scenic coastal view across the straits, the forest and the marshland.
Yellow Trail
The Yellow Trail had a few observation towers around a huge wetland reserve and the surrounding mangrove.
While inside one of the taller observation towers, we took a moment to watch the incoming tides flowing energetically and filling the dried marshes.
It is an interesting place for bird lovers.
Wildlife
We spotted different types of birds, mudskippers, monitor lizards and others.
Fairly quickly, we saw a crocodile swimming in the river while walking the red trail. Then, we saw a crocodile again from the observation tower and also at the edge of the mangrove at the yellow trail.
HP: "Looks like the same crocodile, is there only one crocodile?"
Me :"Maybe, it has to perform at various showtime...?"
At the end of the walk,
YC: "Which trail do you like?"
ME: "The red one"
YC: " I thought the yellow one had more wildlife"
ME: "I come with a tourist mindset, I like the pods, etc too".
YC: "Did you see the kingfisher?"
Me: "What colour is the kingfisher?"
We were undecided about whether to take a bus from Sungei Buloh to Kranji MRT or to start walking straight from Sungeh Buloh (passing through the industrial estate and along the trucks on the road).
HP made the decision to take the bus (Thankfully! The road was dusty and the weather was very hot by then).
The sun was relentless as we walked from Kranji MRT to Marsiling Mall for a REST and a good lunch.
[Highlight of the walk so far: Roasted meat, grilled rojak, sugar cane, 🥥 and fruit juice 😋 😋]
It was decided that we would continue walking to Sembawang Park (I've never been there before 😊).
ME: "How far is it?"
HP:"One said 7 km, another said 10km. Don't know who to believe?" 😐
Whether it was 7km or 10km, it turned out to be a long and arduous walk along the pavement beside a long row of factories and industrial buildings.
HP+ left at Canberra Road and looked visibly flushed and tired. [Tempted to go off too, but Sembawang Park beckoned].
We continued walking and turned into Ottawa Road. The area was lush green and rustic with rows of black-and-white houses and walk-up apartments.
[A 'NZ5' 🚔 drove by a few times... Did we look NEEDY, SUSPICIOUS or CRAZY?? 😈😒]
As we walked, I noted interesting road names such as "Montreal, Canada, Bermuda, Lagos, Pakistan, Wellington, Falklands".
[All while I was slowly being "cooked" under my umbrella by the scorching sun 🍳]
ME: "Is your google maps set to 'Round-the-World" trip or the 'shortest' route? Where is Sembawang Park"? 😑
YC: " How would you like to go to Sembawang Park?"
ME: "By the shortest route!"
YC: "Then let's go by Queen's Avenue"
We proceeded towards Queen's Avenue, passing Malta and Cyprus Road, before finally coming in sight of the park!
We stopped at the Sembawang Park Signage, too tired to even contemplate exploring the park.
WS: "I was looking for a bus stop to stop walking along the way!" 🚏🚌
OK: "The walk to Canberra MRT is about ~2km from here". 👟🚝
ME - hopped into a taxi that had just let off its previous passengers. [Best move of the day] 🚖
A Final Dash
We realised it was HP's birthday after she left!!!
[Thus she did not get any birthday wishes in the morning, she queued to buy drinks and rojak, we walked such long distance that she fell asleep on her way home in the MRT... ]
After a few texts, a shower back home, out again, and we arrived at her car-park with a cake. 🍰
ME: "Send this up to Aunt HP house"
J: "Really?!?! Why?"
ME: "Because it is more PRO than if I bring it up"
J: "But, the delivery guy usually wears uniform."
ME: "I think LalaMove has no uniform. Just imagine you are working for LaLaMove. GO!".
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY HP!"
Post Walk
(1) Mid-afternoon walk is just too hot! Probably shouldn't have a walk during these hours unless there aren't other available times
(2) Extremely tiring, but at last we covered a walk in the North!
(3) The photographers in the park reminded me of Jade, the Taiwanese's bird expert on the cruise; always carrying multiple camera equipments with her 📷📹. Hopefully, I can visit her soon.. 😊
